Lincoln Memorial - Washington DC Road Trip
If you take a road trip to Washington DC, you have to visit the Lincoln Memorial. The construction of the Memorial began in 1914 and it was dedicated in 1922. Lincoln’s only remaining son, 79 year old Robert Todd Lincoln was there for the celebration.
The monument is surrounded by 36 columns, one for each state in the union at the time of Lincoln’d death.
The concrete foundation for the monument is 36-44 FT deep!
One interesting idea about the Lincoln Memorial is that the sculptor Daniel Chester French sculpted Lincoln’s hands to represent the letters A & L in American Sign Language. The sculptor had a deaf son and was very familiar with sign language.
