Gathland State Park
Gathland State Park is a state park near Burkittsville, Maryland. It is on the former estate of war correspondent George Alfred Townsend (1841-1914), Townsend wrote under the pen name "Gath" during the American Civil War. He was a very successful writer during that time and over the years he built many structures at this location. The park is also right along the Appalachian trail.
We toured the estate and the small museums. It was an interesting story but nothing that will keeps a child's interest for more than a few minutes. We also walked the Appalachian trail for a bit as well. The part closes to the Gathland State Estate was pretty easy walking, a few miles away it was much harder and mostly rocky steep hills.
If you are nearby its worth a visit.
