Allegany State Park-Salamanca, NY

Allegany State Park is a great place to go camping in Western New York.  We have made several trips here for a camping weekend with friends. We always have a good time.

The first road trip to Allegany State Park was tent camping in the Red House Area.  I forget the name of the loop but we did have an afternoon rain storm that totally flooded our campsite.

We did some fishing and bike riding and a good time was had by all.  In the tent camping area, we did experience a skunk wandering through at night, but that was the only wildlife we saw.

On our second trip, we decided to try the cabins in the Quaker Area.  They are rustic to say the least, we happened to have a sheet with us that we were able to cut up to make some curtains to cover the windows.  I would suggest bringing some extra towels and some small nails and a hammer.  The loop we were on had only an outhouse style bathroom for the 3 cabins.  It was pretty gross so we didn’t really use it.  We ended up driving over to the next loop that had a shower facility.

As you can see from the pictures above, the inside of the cabins are quite plain, and they do not keep bugs or mice out.  We had 2 mice in our cabin running around the top of the walls all night.  We ended up pushing the bed to the middle of the cabin in hopes that if a mouse fell, he would not land on us while we slept.  There are newer cabins in the park that aren’t so beat up but we have never stayed in them.
